Welcome to the website of Sustainable Clonakilty

2009 Clonakilty Map

The main reason for printing the map/leaflet that was distributed on 24 September, was to increase awareness of what Sustainable Clonakilty, and in particular the Clonergy 2020 Project, is trying to achieve.

In the course of conducting the Clonergy 2020 energy audit of the town through selecting a random number of households by their address, we became aware that no recent full street map of Clonakilty existed.  A number of streets go by more than one name and some official names have fallen into disuse. Quite a few streets have no street name sign, and at least one has no name in common usage.  There are a number of housing estates in the town built within the last ten years, and an increase in population means that many people do not have the local knowledge of longer-term residents.

It was decided to produce a new map as the means for getting the message across.  A simple brochure could hit the recycling bin, or worse the rubbish, straight away, but it was hoped that the map might have more longevity.  Using a map also helps reduce fuel wasted through driving around looking for a particular address.  Funding came from the Cork County Council Local Agenda 21 Project which is designed for this purpose, and Sustainable Clonakilty provided the volunteer labour for research, design etc. The leaflet is printed on paper that is environmentally friendly (you can check with Walsh Printers whose phone number is on the leaflet).

If you have no use for the map and other information it contains, please keep it in 'as new condition' and take it into the library.  The librarians are happy to pass them on to people from the greater Clonakilty area who did not get the mail drop, and do want the information.  If you have any comments please contact me, Alison Wickham at 023 88 35 241 or sustainableclon@gmail.com .

Perhaps you have some good ideas on getting the message across, and actions to take to speed up progress on the Clonergy 2020 project?  We'd love to hear them.  Many members have been working solidly on various sustainability projects for the last three years and would be grateful for an injection of fresh ideas and enthusiasm.
